The aim of the module is to introduce you to the principles of non-directive play therapy and the therapeutic play continuum, working within the ethical framework of Play Therapy UK (PTUK). It aims to prepare you to work one to one with children who have slight to moderate social, emotional and behaviour difficulties as safe practitioners, including essential setting up activities. It will enable the participants to become research aware, reflective and self-evaluative practitioners, who appreciate the influence and variety of communication methods in the therapeutic relationship and meet regulatory and statutory requirements for the profession.

This module is designed to enable students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to work with children in a therapeutic play setting. The focus is on safe and effective practice, and the aim is to increase students' competence in this area. By the end of the module, students should feel confident in their ability to provide emotional support to children and to work effectively in a range of settings. The requirement for 100 hours of supervised therapeutic work in an appropriate clinical placement setting is an essential component of the module. It allows students to apply what they have learned in a real-world setting, under the guidance and supervision of experienced practitioners. This practical experience is essential for developing the skills and confidence needed to work effectively with children in a therapeutic context.

Module 6: Integrating the therapeutic toolkit with practice and research

To enable mastery of clay and masks for application within a broad range of learning differences or conditions will be further enhanced. To enable the use of the toolkit with a wide range of learning differences or conditions. Extend knowledge of neurobiology and research methods. This includes contributing to the play therapy practice-based evidence base and the consideration of new topics for research. Working therapeutically with groups is put into practice. Knowledge of neurobiology and links with psychotherapy are extended. Solutions are found to issues or difficulties encountered in setting up a play therapy service.

Students will be heavily involved in experiential exercises as well as lectures/presentations, critical discussion, small group seminars, signposted self-study and workshops. Clinical practice under supervision is central to the learning process.
